Such sad news. Only recently had the privilege of meeting him and getting on really well. He definitely had a great vibe and personality/presence. Wish I could have had spent more time with him. His whanau are definitely blessed to have him in their lives. If only we could all have a dad like him. Hugs and love to all the whanau.

Hello Ben and Family, it is with sadness hearing the news, I so wanted to come down, but I have to be in Hospital on Wednesday.
I have penned a few words of remembrance of a great hunting companion and friend for many years, would appreciate if it could be read out at the service,
Kind regards and condolences,
Patrick Cox
Willy Mac,
In our walk through the path of life, there are some who will join you and put a spring in your step, none so more than Willy Mac.
Our paths crossed through a passion for deer stalking, some thirty-five years ago.
Being invited to join the crew on the 1st of April every year at the back whare at Mangaone all those years ago, have left me with great memories of hunting with Willy Mac.
Laid back in his approach, stalking the bush and nature with Willy was no pressure, there were times when Willy kept missing those stags, but we did not care, but we found the problem when taking his gun to a gunsmith, the results were many more stags would fall at the end of Willys gun.
I can still hear his voice from one memorable hunt, when coming across a stag and hinds, I was in the position to shoot, but just behind me, this whispered voice said, “don’t shot the hinds.”
Nek minute my shot rang out, hinds bolted, stag sort of ran towards us and dropped amongst some kanukas, I put my rifle down, pulled my knife out and stepped over it to cut its throat, bugger me it stood up, then Willys voice yelled out, lookout, I got out of there and Willys applied the coup de grace, much to my relief.
We arrived back at the hut a couple of happy hunters.
A few beers where never to far away and as the sun set and hunting stories and lies of old were told, until Willy pulled out his guitar, a dab hand at playing out a tune, Bill Couper with his melodious voice would always sing the right words, backed up by Toby Story singing a little out of tune. These memories and comradery we will all take to the grave, never to be forgotten.
I don’t know how, but Willy always slept in the same room as Toby, I guess he was a deep sleeper, because Toby could certainly saw some wood.
We lost Toby one hunt and it was getting late in the afternoon when Willy made the call we should go and look for him, being in the search and lookabout, as they called it, willy was the first one out the door, never to leave a mate out in the cold for the night, lucky Toby had found his way back to the track and the emergency was aborted, but we wanted to know the details again over a few beers as to what happened.
When at one with nature, as Willy would find himself, he would arrive back at the hut with a piece of flora, needing to know what it was.
One other hunt, it had got late in the morning, nothing happening, we sat down and eating our play lunch, between mouthfuls I gave the odd roar, well bugger me said Willy we have one going, no panic, kept eating, when I said to Willy, I think he’s coming up, I think your right Pat, we better go and get heem.
We followed a game trail down a ridge and met the stag coming up, I could have taken the shot, and for whatever reason I didn’t, nek minute, Boom, Willys rifle spoke out, He said why did you not take the shot, I said I dunno, but it did not matter a nice ten pointer lay dead at our feet.
Willy would have the back steaks down the front of his shit, forequarters around his shoulders and me with the hindquarters on my back, we made our way back to the track a couple of hours away.
I could go on, as the stories lose nothing in the telling, and there will be so many of you out there that have shared the company of Willy Mac, whether it be in the bush, at work or down the club enjoying a beer, he will live in our memories for ever, his heirloom beefsteak tomato’s were a legend on their own.
So next time you are out there in our stunning country chasing stags, just stop for a minute, because I know he will be watching you, and you will hear his voice,
Don’t shoot the hinds.
Goodbye Willy, it has been my pleasure to have spent so many hunting days with you.
Patrick Cox
